Aaron Walks and Camping on Lake George

So Aaron really started walking last week. It started with him getting brave enough to routinely go between furniture that was 2-3 steps apart, but by Wednesday he was just plain walking, as in taking 15+ steps all by himself. He's still really unsteady, and he needs to learn how to get up without help or furniture, but he totally walking.

Unfortunately, he didn't get to put that new skill to work when we went camping on Lake George this weekend. We drove out there on Friday, and Aaron took his morning nap in the car. We stopped for lunch, and the hope was that both boys would take their afternoon nap in the car. That plan didn't really work out, and the end result was Mudgie not napping at all, and Aaron crying unless I had my arm in the backseat rubbing his head, and falling asleep 20 minutes before we got the marina! Needless to say, Aaron was a little cranky for the rest of the day.

Mudgie was a little tentative on the boat ride out to the island where we were camping, and Aaron cried for much of the trip, but everyone was happy when we got there. The site was beautiful, but very rocky, which is why Aaron couldn't really walk around there on his own. Mudgie was in love with it all, and had a great time playing with the sticks and dirt. Aaron really seemed to enjoy it too, and surprisingly, didn't eat that much dirt.

Because we had to boat everything out to the campsite, we tried to pack light, meaning we didn't bring the pack-and-play for Aaron. The plan was for him to sleep with me on the air mattress. Again, Aaron wasn't really into our plan. Maybe it was because he was cranky and over-tired, or maybe it was because he was completely confused by the tent and the sleeping arrangements, but it took a long time to get him to sleep that night. Mudgie didn't mind hanging out by the campfire cooking marshmallows while I got Aaron to sleep, so I guess it all worked out.

We all went tubing on Saturday, and that was a lot of fun. While Aaron doesn't like his life jacket, he still did really well on the boat (maybe because I was able to get him to nap). All the grown-ups went tubing, and then we thought it would be a good idea for Mudgie to ride (slowly) in the tube with me. What made us think that was a good idea is beyond me. Giant parenting fail. Fortunately, we realized our mistake before we really got moving, and no one ended up in the water. We saved that for back at the campsite when I got Mudgie to swim in the lake with me. It was his first time swimming with his life jacket on, and while he was scared at first, when he realized he could float on his own he loved it! He thought it was so cool how Elizabeth dove into the water and swam underneath him. It was probably the highlight of the trip for me, seeing him swimming in the lake.

Mudgie also did some fishing with Grampy Steve and Elizabeth, and I guess Daddy too, but I don't think he actually fished. When they got back, Mudgie was so excited to tell me how he got to touch a fish. He told me he said, "Hello fish. Nice to meet you!" I'm so glad he didn't see it floating in the water after they put it back in. That night Mudgie stayed up late roasting marshmallows, making s'mores, and eating jiffy pop. He sat on my lap and watch the fire until he was practically falling asleep there. He promised to always cuddle with me like that, and I do plan to hold him to that when he's 16!

We came home on Sunday, and we packed up early as we knew it was going to rain. However, this meant there was no place for Aaron to sleep when it was time for his morning nap. My poor baby was so tired, but he wouldn't settle down...that is until Grampy sang him a song. It was like a little bit of baby crack (or Nicholini from the book Nicholini's Song that we often read). Whatever the magic was, it got Aaron to relax and he fell asleep in my arms on the boat. I rode in the backseat for the ride home, and things went much smoother. I was able to entertain the cranky children, referee squables, and even nurse Aaron to sleep (while wearing my seatbelt thank you very much).

The rest of the day was filled with playing with toys, taking baths, and preparing to do it all again tomorrow. Next up is car camping in New Hampshire, where we can bring more stuff, and hopefully have as much fun and better naps!
